COMMEMORATIVE AIR FORCE TEMPORARILY SUSPENDS
FLYING OF CAF AIRCRAFT
MIDLAND,
Texas (Oct. 29, 2003) - The Commemorative Air Force (CAF) has
elected to temporarily suspend flight operations for its fleet
of aircraft. This action is taken as a result of the unfortunate
loss of two aircraft during the 2003 airshow season - the He 111
German bomber on July 10, 2003, and the FM-2 Wildcat on Oct. 18,
2003.
The
temporary flight suspension, which was directed by the CAF's board
of directors, will facilitate a thorough review of the organization's
flight operations and maintenance procedures. It will also allow
all CAF pilots to participate in a formal safety review. Every
CAF pilot must complete this review before being returned to CAF
flight status. Exceptions to this policy will be extended to CAF
airplanes that have previously contracted appearances or special
flights as approved by the CAF's director of operations and maintenance.
CAF officials expect normal flight operations to resume no later
than Nov. 24, 2003.
"An
action of this type is not uncommon especially in today's modern
military. It is an effective means by which aviation oriented
organizations emphasize safety in all aspects of flight operations,"
Bob Rice, CAF president said. "This prudent measure will
serve to ensure the safety of CAF crewmembers and the preservation
of the CAF's fleet of aircraft."
The CAF is a nonprofit organization dedicated to flying and restoring
World War II aircraft. Based in Midland, Texas, the organization
has over 10,000 members and operates a fleet of over 150 World
War II aircraft. There are 336 pilots certified to fly CAF airplanes.
